It's a thing..

The way we learn is broken. The traditional four-year college path, once the golden ticket to a middle-class life, is no longer a guarantee of success. A staggering number of young Americans are leaving college with tens of thousands of dollars in debt, only to find themselves underemployed. According to a recent study, nearly half of college graduates are in jobs that don't require their degree, and for many, the financial premium once associated with a college education has vanished. This leaves a vast, untapped pool of talent locked out of the workforce they were promised.

Meanwhile, a different kind of crisis is unfolding. The skilled trades—the backbone of our infrastructure, manufacturing, and economy—are facing a critical talent shortage. By 2030, a projected 2.1 million skilled trades jobs in manufacturing alone are expected to go unfilled. This isn't just a business problem; it's a national one. Industries are struggling to keep up with demand, and the economic impact of these unfilled positions could exceed $1 trillion by 2030.

This chasm between a workforce with a "broken" education and an industry with a desperate need for skilled labor is the most significant economic challenge of our time. And now, there's a new variable: Artificial Intelligence. As AI continues to automate routine tasks, a Stanford Digital Economy Lab study reveals that it is disproportionately affecting early-career workers in fields like software development and customer service, with some entry-level employment in these roles declining by nearly 20% since late 2022.

These trends are what led Geoffrey Hinton, one of the most respected minds in the field, to give some unconventional career advice. Known as the "Godfather of AI" for his pioneering work on neural networks and deep learning, Hinton is a British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist who was awarded the Turing Award, often called the "Nobel Prize of computing," in 2018 for his foundational work that underpins modern AI. When asked about the potential for AI to negatively impact society and what advice he would give to someone considering a career path, he said: "Train to be a plumber."

The context of this quote is a stark warning. Hinton left his position at Google in 2023 to speak freely about his concerns regarding the rapid and unchecked development of AI. He argues that while AI will increasingly replace "mundane intellectual labor" in fields like law and finance, it's going to be a long time before it can match the physical dexterity, adaptability, and on-the-spot problem-solving required for hands-on trades. His advice wasn't a joke; it was a serious recommendation to pursue jobs that are fundamentally resistant to automation.
